UCL-led DTE and DTP Studentship Application Portal

UELA 27-28 UCL EPSRC Doctoral Landscape Award - Application portal
Opens 26 Oct 2026 08:00 (GMT)
Deadline 8 Jan 2027 12:00 (GMT)
Description

Welcome to the UCL ESPRC Doctoral Landscape Award (UELA) 2027-28 application portal.

Before beginning an application in the portal, please visit the UELA 2027-28 website and read carefully:

  • General information on the website.
  • Guidance for Applicants (PDF file)
  • Project catalogues (PDF files)

UELA will offer approximately 50 fully funded, four-year studentships for the 2027–28 academic year. Around 130 projects are advertised, spanning the breadth of the EPSRC remit.

Projects are categorised as either standard or collaborative. Collaborative projects are co-funded by an external partner, such as an industrial partner.

Studentships are open to candidates with either Home or International fee status. However, EPSRC limits the number of International students to 30% of the cohort, meaning that a maximum of 15 International students may be recruited.

Due to this restriction, only collaborative projects are open to International candidates. Collaborative projects are also open to Home candidates, while standard projects are open only to candidates with Home fee status.

Studentships are expected to start on 1 October 2027, unless exceptional circumstances require an alternative start date. Exceptional circumstances may include, but are not limited to, disability or caring responsibilities.

Where unavoidable, UELA reserves the right to withdraw projects from the catalogue before or after the application deadline. Candidates who have applied for a project that is subsequently withdrawn will be informed as soon as possible.

The UELA application process is centrally managed by the UCL ESPRC DTE Manager. However please note that the DTE Manager can't provide advice regarding: Degree requirements (candidates must check the project’s host department requirements), project suitability (candidates must contact the project Supervisor and/or UCL host department), fee status (candidates may contact e.g. UCL Student Immigration Advice).

The application deadline is 8 January 2027 at noon UK time. Please note that UCL will be closed over the Christmas period and no email support will be available during the closure. We therefore strongly encourage applicants to submit their applications and ensure that both references have been received by 16 December 2026.
